A man is in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a multi-vehicle crash shut down the Gardiner Expressway’s westbound express lanes Monday, Toronto police say.

A tractor-trailer rolled onto its side and landed on a car in an adjacent lane of traffic near Islington Avenue, said police spokeswoman Const. Wendy Drummond.

Emergency crews worked for more than an hour to extricate a 21-year-old man from the car.

An Ornge air ambulance was called to the scene to transport the injured man to hospital, but the helicopter was called off and the man was taken to hospital via ground ambulance.

A Toronto EMS spokesperson said the man was conscious and alert after the crash, which occurred shortly after 10 a.m.

Two other people were taken to hospital by ground ambulance. Both suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the EMS spokesperson said.
