A man in his 50s had to be rescued from his burning vehicle Tuesday after a collision on Highway 27 near Dixon Road.

The vehicle caught fire either before or after colliding with another vehicle in the northbound lanes of the highway shortly before 3 p.m.

Paramedics said the man was pinned from the waist down for around 40 minutes.

Ten fire trucks responded to the scene to extinguish the blaze.

Firefighters had to break the window to remove the man from the vehicle. He was eventually freed and taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A picture submitted by a CP24 viewer on Twitter showed smoke coming off a red pickup truck with a mangled front end.

About 200 litres of diesel fuel also leaked onto the roadway, firefighters said.

Paramedics said no other injuries were reported.

Higghway 27 has been closed down between northbound Dixon Road and southbound Albion Road due to the collision, Ontario Provincial Police said.

It wasn’t clear when the road would reopen.
