A 57-year-old man was revived and rushed to hospital after he was pulled from a burning building on Danfoth Avenue without vital signs Tuesday morning.

Firefighters responded to a call at a three-story building at 1169 Danforth Avenue, just west of Greenwood Avenue, at around 8:50 a.m.

They arrived to find black smoke billowing out the ground-level, apparently from a fire on the second floor.

Firefighters knocked down the fire within about ten minutes and found one man lifeless in his second-floor apartment, Toronto Fire Captain David Eckerman told CP24.

Firefighters performed CPR at the scene and managed to revive the man. Toronto Paramedic Services said he was then rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

“Having a quick response and having the quick work with the crews actually brought this guy from death back to life,” Acting Platoon Chief Mark Fitzsimmons told CP24 at the scene.

The fire appears to have started in the man’s kitchen, Fitzsimmons said. He said it’s not yet clear whether there were working smoke detectors in the apartment.

No one else was injured.

Fitzsimmons said firefighters are now checking over the building to make sure the fire didn’t get into any walls or crawl spaces.

“Before we’re going to open up and put anybody back in we’re going to ensure the fire is entirely out,” Fitzsimmons said.
