A 22-year-old man suffered serious injuires after his car was struck by a freight train south of Bowmanville Thursday afternoon.

Durham Regional Police said the vehicle and train collided shortly before 2:45 p.m., at a level crossing on Port Darlington Road, south of Lake Road. Police said a Hyundai Santa Fe SUV was attempting to cross the train tracks.

Ornge was called to the scene, but could not attend because all of its helicopters were on other calls. The man was taken to a local hospital and later a Toronto hospital for treatment.

Durham Regional Police’s traffic management team says the weather at the time of the collision was "favourable" and the gates at the rail crossing were down with lights flashing at the time.
