A 22-year-old man was pronounced dead on scene following a shooting in the city’s Corktown neighbourhood early Saturday morning.

Officers from 51 Division found the victim sprawled out on the ground of a gas station parking lot near Richmond Street and Parliament Street shortly after 2 a.m.

The victim, who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, was then pronounced dead on scene.

Police say they have since determined that the victim likely ran southbound on Parliament Street after being shot on Queen Street near Parliament Street.

“There was a significant amount of blood at the scene and as a result of that officers responding were able to track the movements of the individual back towards Queen Street,” Det. Sgt. Mike Patterson told CP24 Saturday morning. “We know that there were a number of businesses in that area that were operating bars and such and we are asking anyone that may have been at those bars and saw something to come forward. It was right around last call, so there were people in the area.”

Patterson said that police were able to locate shell casings and some “further evidence” in front of a building on Queen Street just east of Parliament Street.

The detective said that police have also taken statements from several people who have come forward.

“At this point we don’t have any suspect information or suspect vehicle information. It is a big puzzle we have to put together,” he said.

Few details are known about the shooting itself, though one witness who was nearby told CP24 on Saturday that he heard about five gunshots and then saw someone running from the north side of Queen Street and heading southbound.

“He was a very athletic guy because he was running fast,” he said. “I don’t know where he went.”

Parliament Street has been closed from Richmond Street to Queen Street and Queen Street has been closed between Parliament Street and Power Street due to the police investigation.
