A 30-year-old man was fatally shot on the sidewalk in front of a Roncesvalles Village apartment building after police arrived on scene for a possible shooting call, a spokesperson for the Special Investigations Unit says.

Officers were called to the Howard Park Avenue and Roncesvalles Avenue area at around 6 a.m.

The SIU says that once officers arrived on scene they located the 30-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman nearby.

At that point, the 30-year-old man was shot.

The man, who has since been identified as Jenyon Middleton, was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The woman also sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries, though it remains unclear whether she was shot before or after the arrival of police.

The SIU is also refusing to comment on whether police fired the fatal shots that killed the Middleton, however Spokesperson Jason Gennaro did tell reporters on Sunday that the SIU is “currently investigating” that.

“We are working on determining what exactly transpired in the moments leading up to his firearm injury,” Gennaro said. “It could be a number of days or weeks. It depends on what the evidence shows us. We have to review any video evidence we might find, our forensic investigators are currently mapping the scene and we will be looking at evidence collected from the firearm itself.”

In cases of police-involved shootings, the SIU will usually designate subject officers and witness officers as part of their investigation however that is yet to happen in this case.

Gennaro was asked whether the deceased individual was armed but declined comment.

“That is something we are working to determine,” he said.

The relationship between Middleton and woman is not clear but Gennaro did say that they were together at the time of the shooting and knew each other.

The SIU has assigned six investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.

An arm's length agency, the SIU is called in to investigate incidents involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
