A Markham couple has been sentenced in connection with the 2013 death of their one-month-old son.

The pair, who were initially charged with second-degree murder, pleaded guilty to lesser charges on Wednesday.

The child’s mother, 23-year-old Thi My Phuong Bui, pleaded guilty to failing to provide the necessaries of life and was sentenced to six months in jail. The baby’s father, 22-year-old Kien Phat Tran, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was ordered to serve six years in prison.

Police say they first learned of the death on Aug. 22, 2013, when the pair arrived at a local hospital with the boy, who was without vital signs.

After an investigation revealed suspicious circumstances around the death, it was later ruled a homicide.
