Police say a 46-year-old married father of two who was gunned down outside his Rexdale townhouse late Monday night had a hearing impairment and may not have even heard his attackers approach.

Officers responding to a 911 call for shots fired found Donald Beckles suffering from at least one gunshot wound on the ground outside his Jamestown Crescent home at around 11 p.m. Monday.

Beckles was rushed to hospital without vital signs, but was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.

Police say the stay-at-home dad of two teenage children was targeted, however the motive remains unknown. Beckles didn’t have a criminal record and his "focus was on his family," according to Detective Murray Barnes.

“There are people out there that know what happened here today,” Barnes told reporters at the scene Tuesday morning. “Mr. Beckles was simply having a smoke while his wife and children were asleep in bed. We are asking people to step up and if they have information to please give us a call.”

According to Barnes, police have recovered surveillance video footage that shows two male suspects running from the scene of the shooting and getting into a black vehicle. Barnes added that there are also a number of other cameras in the area and he is hopeful that more footage can be obtained.

In the meantime, officers are canvassing the area in the hopes that someone may have heard or saw something that will help them track down the suspects. A total of six shell casings have also been recovered from the scene.

“The more we canvas the more we find out what a good person Mr. Beckles was. He was absolutely innocent,” Barnes told CP24 in a subsequent interview.
