Two eastbound lanes of Highway 401 at Highway 115 in Newcastle are closed following a massive fuel spill that occurred around 1 a.m.

About 20,000 litres of fuel spilled onto the highway and the nearby Wilmot Creek after a tanker truck hit a bridge and overturned into a ditch.

Ontario Provincial Police said the closure could last for most of the day. Heavy tow trucks are on scene to get the tanker out of the ditch.

The Ministry of Environment is investigating the spill in the creek.

The left eastbound lane reopened around 6 a.m. Two right lanes remain closed.
