Michael and Doug Ford are deciding which of the two of them will run to replace Rob Ford on Toronto City Council.

CP24 has learned Michael, a public schoolboard trustee who is the late former mayor’s nephew, and Rob Ford’s brother, Doug plan to decide which of the two of them will run in a yet-to-be called byelection in Ward 2 in Etobicoke in the next few weeks.

Rob Ford passed away on March 22 after a prolonged battle with lipsosarcoma, a rare form of cancer that targeted organs in his abdomen. He was laid to rest

He served as the councillor for Ward 2 between 2000 and 2010, and again in 2014 after a single tumultuous term as mayor of Toronto.

Doug Ford served as councillor for the ward while his brother was mayor.

Once city council officially declares Ford’s seat vacant they will have 60 days to decide whether to appoint someone to fill the seat or hold a by-election.

If council opts to hold a byelection, the city clerk would then have another 60 days to set a nomination deadline for the byelection. Voters in Ward 2 would then head to the polls 45 days after that.

It is believed council will declare the seat vacant on its next meeting scheduled for May 3, meaning the vote could be held as late as mid-October.
