TORONTO - Gender rights activists are applauding an agreement in Ontario regarding transgender hockey players.

Minor hockey players under the auspices of Hockey Canada in Ontario are now able to choose a dressing room based on whether they see themselves as male or female.

In addition, players are entitled to be addressed by their preferred name, as well as by the pronoun that corresponds to their self-identified gender.

The changes are the result of a settlement of a human rights complaint against Hockey Canada.

The agreement is aimed at protecting young players from discrimination and harassment based on their transgender status.

Seventeen-year-old Jesse Thompson, of Oshawa, Ontario filed the complaint last year.

He says he hopes other kids will now feel they don't have to hide any more.
