A woman and her two sons are in hospital after a vehicle slammed into them at a Markham bus stop Friday morning, York Regional Police say.

It happened around 10 a.m. at the intersection of Harvest Moon and Clayton drives, not far from Pacific Mall.

Witnesses at the scene told police that the woman and her two young boys had just gotten off of a bus when a silver sedan behind the bus accelerated, striking the group, hitting a stop sign and another vehicle before continuing on to slam into a church.

Witnesses at the scene said they heard a bang and then came out to see the children and the woman lying on the ground.

One of the boys, a three-year-old, was rushed to hospital by land ambulance in critical condition, YRP Const. Andy Pattenden said. His condition has since been upgraded to non-life-threatening, police said.

The woman and her other son, a six-year-old, were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, York Regional EMS said.

The 67-year-old female driver of the sedan was uninjured and was taken into custody at the scene.

“The driver has been arrested for dangerous driving. No charges as of yet,” Pattenden said. “The investigation is still ongoing. Our Major Collision Investigation Unit is here. They plan to deploy an unmanned aerial vehicle to map this scene plus all of the physical evidence that they’re gathering right now.”

Roads around the scene are expected to be closed for several hours as the collision reconstruction team investigates.
