The holiday getaway is underway and if all goes according to plan today could be the busiest day of the year at Pearson International Airport.

Officials at the airport say they are expecting 121,000 travellers to pass through the facility throughout the day as the Christmas rush shifts into a higher gear.

Though the airport says "operations are running normally" it is advising travellers to arrive for their flight at least two hours ahead of time as long lines are expected.

"There are a few things people can do to help themselves," Greater Toronto Airports Authority Spokesperson Trish Krale told CP24 Friday morning. "One would be to check in online before you get here, so you have one less line to stand in. Also, be aware of the restrictions around your carry-on luggage and pack properly. If everybody is packed properly those lines are going to move faster."

Kale said travellers should also refrain from bringing wrapped presents in their carry-on luggage in case security has to open them up, but don't fret: the airport will have a gift station on the other side of security where travellers can have their presents wrapped for a small donation.

Santa himself will also be at the airport throughout the day to try to provide some stress relief to wary travellers.

"Santa and Mrs. Claus will be walking around, reading stories to kids and just chatting with people," Krale said.

It is estimated that a total of 2 million travellers pass through the airport in a two-week period around Christmas.
