Toronto police say the mother of a four-year-old boy found wandering naked in the city's west end has been arrested and charged.

According to police, the 23-year-old woman has been charged with abandoning a child under 10 and additional charges are pending.

Const. Jennifer Sidhu told CP24 that at around 1:30 p.m., officers received a call about a child who was walking around without any clothes on in the area of Lake Shore Boulevard West and Twelfth Street in Etobicoke.

Police say a resident in the neighbourhood heard crying and when they looked out their window, they spotted the child. The neighbour, police say, rushed out to wrap the boy in a blanket and went to search for his parents. When the parents could not be located, the neighbour called police.

The boy was not harmed during the ordeal but has been taken to St. Joseph's Health Centre as a precaution.

The Children's Aid Society has also been notified, which police say is standard procedure for situations of this nature.

The woman is being held overnight and will appear in court Saturday morning, police say.

The incident comes on the heels of the death of three-year-old Elijah Marsh, who wandered away from a North York apartment and out into the cold early Thursday morning.
