The mother of a seven-year-old girl who was killed by her guardians in Toronto nearly eight years ago has signed up to run in a coming byelection.

Bernice Sampson – the mother of Katelynn Sampson – registered Monday to run as a candidate for Toronto District School Board Ward 1.

The seat was formerly held by Michael Ford, nephew of former mayor Rob Ford and former councillor Doug Ford.

Earlier this month, Ford announced that he would enter the race to replace his late uncle Rob as councillor for Ward 2.

The byelections for both positions will be held July 25.

Sampson is one of eight candidates currently registered, according to the City of Toronto website.

Kateynn Sampson was found on Aug. 3, 2008 after one of her guardians called 911, claiming the child had choked.

In 2012, her guardians Donna Irving and Warren Johnson pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in connection with her death. They are both currently serving life sentences.

Katelynn came to live with the couple after her mother realized she could no longer care for her.
