Severe weather rolled through part of southern Ontario on Tuesday, bringing powerful winds, lightning, hail and torrential rain.

North of Toronto, the roof of a truck repair shop in Alliston was partially torn off and thrown into a parking lot when nasty weather struck shortly before noon.

No injuries were reported in the incident at Currie Truck Garage.

In nearby Essa, fire officials are investigating whether a lightning strike is to blame for a house fire. Barn fires in Dufferin County are also under investigation.

In the city, high winds and tree branches brought down power lines on De Quincy Boulevard, in the Bathurst Street and Wilson Avenue area, as well as on Spalding Road, in the Wilson Avenue and Dufferin Street area.

Drivers also had to exercise added caution on city streets, as a number of traffic lights were temporarily out across the city.

Additionally, roughly 4,000 customers were without power southeast of Markham for a portion of the afternoon, Sandy Dorscho, of PowerStream, told CP24.

The weather also had an impact on travel to and from Toronto.

As of 2:40 p.m., dozens of flights were cancelled at Pearson International Airport. Ground crews were warned to stay off the tarmac after a lightning advisory was issued.

This delayed passengers at baggage claim as the advisory prevented crews from accessing the aircraft to retrieve luggage.

Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson said a line of strong thunderstorms went through the area, south of Barrie.

The national weather agency issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Peel, Halton, York, and Durham regions shortly after noon.
