You can now use your smartphone to pay to park at select Toronto lots.

Mayor John Tory and the Toronto Parking Authority announced Thursday that the city will be rolling out a new Green P mobile app that will allow drivers to use their phones to purchase parking time, track their parking history and extend time remotely at a number of Green P lots across Toronto.

The app will also send an alert to users when their parking is about to expire.

“The new Green P app is going to give customers I think the best possible parking experience,” Tory said.

“I just think this kind of approach makes sense.”

The new mobile payment system will be introduced in phases and the Toronto Parking Authority says outdoor 'pay and display' lots should be equipped with this new feature by late spring.

The app is currently supported at lots located at 87 Richmond St. East, 44 Parliament St.,  271 Front St. East, 13 Isabella St., 35 Erindale Ave.

Tory said modernizing services is an important step to move the city forward.

“I think the city has been sort of frozen in time with respect to moving ahead, to adopt the kinds of technologies and the kinds of modernization of the way we deliver services to make it more convenient for people to live in the city and to do business in the city,” he said.

“I think we have actually ended up behind other Canadian in a number of instances and I am determined to see us where we should be.”
