The next phase of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT Project will begin next week as crews begin tunneling westward.

Next Tuesday, two tunnel-boring machines will start moving westbound from Brentcliffe Road toward Yonge Street and the province says the goal is for all tunneling to be completed by the end of 2016.

The Crosstown will provide 19 kilometres of light rail transit along Eglinton Avenue from Weston Road to Kennedy Station and will run underground between Keele Street and Laird Avenue.

The LRT will include 25 stops that link to several bus routes, three subway stations and various GO Transit lines.

Speaking to reporters Thursday morning, Ontario’s transportation minister Steven Del Duca provided an update on the project.

“Since work on the Crosstown began in 2011, we’ve made significant progress. Tunnel-boring of the western segment is well underway having completed four of the six kilometres,” Del Duca said.

“It will offer reliable transit to Toronto residents and integrate GTHA transit services. In fact, this new line will be 60 per cent faster than the existing bus service in operation today.”

The LRT is expected to be in service by September 2021.
