The TTC says Bombardier’s latest timeline appears to be on track to deliver the city’s much delayed fleet of new streetcars.

TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said Tuesday that the TTC expects to receive four new streetcars per month starting in April.

“We will start to see four a month starting in April. We’ll get another one at the end of March,” Ross told CP24.

So far the new streetcars have been deployed on the TTC’s shorter Spadina and Harbourfront streetcar lines, routes where Ross said the TTC can “get the most bang for their buck” out of the vehicles.

However he said a new deployment plan that will be unveiled soon will see the new streetcars servicing some of the city’s nine other streetcar routes starting in the spring. While Ross wouldn’t provide full details about the plan, he said it will involve the busy Bathurst and King streetcar lines.

The new proposed streetcar line has been dubbed the 514 Cherry, which would run along King Street between Dufferin and Cherry streets, relieving some of the the rush-hour pressure on other east-west streetcar routes that run through downtown.

Ordered years ago, 73 of the new spacious, low-floor vehicles were supposed to be in operation by the end of 2015. However labour issues at Bombardier led to a series of revised dates for delivery. Some vehicles that were delivered were also returned to the company because TTC inspectors found they didn't meet standards.

Currently there are 16 new vehicles in operation on city streets and Bombardier has promised that a revised timeline will see 54 streetcars in operation by the end of the year.

“All the TTC can do is hold Bombardier to its promises. We believe Bombardier’s schedule is achievable,” Ross said.

The TTC has filed a claim for $51 million in liquidated damages for the delayed delivery.

“That cost is really to cover the cost of rebuilding our old streetcars,” Ross said.

The new streetcars are meant to replace the city’s fleet of aging vehicles that have been extended beyond their normal lifespan. The new vehicles also carry more people and are wheelchair accessible.

All 204 streetcars ordered from Bombardier are expected to be in operation by the end of 2019.

The city ordered the vehicles at a cost of $1.25 billion.
