Secondary school teachers with the Peel District School Board will be on the picket lines today after last-minute talks over the weekend failed to produce an agreement. Here is a list of everything else you need to know as you head out the door:

An unsettled mix of weather is in the forecast today with sunny skies this morning followed by a few showers early this afternoon and a risk of a thunderstorm later this afternoon. Southwest winds of 30 km/h gusting up to 50 km/h are expected. The forecast high is 26 C, though it will be closer to 18 C near Lake Ontario.

Classes are cancelled for more than 40,000 high school students in Peel Region today as secondary school teachers at the Peel District School Board officially go on strike. Talks between the Ontario Secondary School teachers Federation and the board went throughout the weekend and late into Sunday night but broke down shortly after a midnight strike deadline. Due to the strike, all regular instructional programs for grade 9 to 12 students are cancelled along with nigh school classes and the Peel board's eLearning courses.

One person was pronounced dead on scene after a two-alarm fire broke out inside an east-end apartment early Monday morning. The blaze began in the bedroom of a third floor apartment above a store on Danforth Avenue east of Greenwood Avenue at around 2:15 a.m. and was knocked down by firefighters within about 25 minutes. The Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate the cause of the blaze.

Mayor John Tory will deliver a speech at the Toronto Region Board of Trade this morning, which will focus on modernizing City Hall to support business innovation. Tory is expected to speak with reporters following the 8 a.m. speech at First Canadian Place.

Sports:

The Toronto Marlies have been eliminated from the American Hockey League playoffs, losing 3-1 to the Grand Rapids Griffins in Game Five of their first round series on Sunday. The Marlies had led the series 2-0 but Grand Rapids won three straight games to advance.

The Toronto Blue Jays will open up a three-game set with the New York Yankees tonight at the Rogers Centre. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 p.m.
