The hot and humid conditions that have been in effect throughout the week will continue today with a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 31 C in the forecast. The extreme heat alert issued by the City of Toronto also remains in effect.

Getting to Billy Bishop Airport is about to get a whole lot easier. The long-awaited pedestrian tunnel that connects the airport terminal on Toronto Island with the mainland will officially open to the public at 1:30 p.m. today following a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. The 853-feet tunnel, which took more than three years to build and cost $82.5 million, will be able to transport 1,100 people per hour via four automated pedways.

Police are looking for suspects after shots were fired near a shopping plaza in Scarborough early Thursday morning. Police say they were called to the scene near Kennedy and Ellesmere roads at around 12:45 a.m. for reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers located between six and nine shell casings in the area and discovered a window with bullet holes in it. No victims were located.

A verdict in the re-trial of Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy has been postponed until August 8. Fahmy was imprisoned for more than a year in Egypt on terror-related charges before being released on bail pending another trial.

Sports:

The Blue Jays will kick off a four-game series with the Kansas City Royals at the Rogers Centre tonight. The game comes 24 hours after recently acquired shortstop Troy Tulowitzki hit a home run and two doubles in an impressive debut in blue and white. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 p.m.

Events:

The Toronto International Film Festival will host a free screening of the animated film ‘Song of the Sea’ at Earl Bales Park. The film screening is part of TIFF’s 40th anniversary celebrations.
