About 40 officers are searching an area in Springwater Township for clues in the 1985 disappearance of Nicole Morin.

The search began at around 8 a.m. and is targeting the ditches and other areas immediately surrounding Old Second South Road.

It is not known what police are looking for, but Toronto Police Insp. Gerry Cashman told CP24 that the search is being done to follow up on a tip about something that happened in the area two days after Morin’s disappearance. That tip was investigated 29 years ago but was recently resubmitted after police appealed for new information.

“I can tell you that 29 years ago contact was made with the OPP, investigations were done and the OPP didn’t find any leads in relation to Nicole Morin or any other case and it was left because there was nothing else to do. The people involved contacted us again, though, and thought that we should come up with more resources and get right into the fields and areas off the concession road and do a full search,” Cashman said. “We are up here now and we are having a look. We may find nothing in which case we will move on in a day or so or we might find something and it will change the complexity of the investigation completely.”

Nicole Morin was eight years old when she disappeared. She left her Etobicoke apartment to go swimming in her building's pool but never arrived to her destination.
