Hamilton police say one person is dead after a small plane crashed into a field near Stoney Creek Friday morning.

The crash occurred near Mud Street and Sixth Road East at around 7 a.m.

“We received a call about an aircraft which had crashed into a field. When we arrived on scene we found a small, single prop aircraft which had crashed into a soy bean field. There was a small fire which was quickly extinguished by firefighters on scene," said Claudio Mostacci, with Hamilton Fire.

Transport Canada will be leading the investigation.

The deceased's age and gender has not yet been released.
