A 27-year-old man is dead and another is in hospital after an early morning shooting at a park near Bathurst and Dundas streets.

Police and paramedics were called to Alexandra Park around 4:15 a.m.

When they arrived paramedics found a man without vital signs with a gunshot wound to his head. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have since identified him as Roberto Dixon of Toronto.

Police said another man found at the scene had been shot multiple times. He was rushed to hospital in serious condition, but is expected to survive.

“Shortly after 4 a.m. there was a group of young men in the park. We believe the suspect approached them on foot and engaged them in a conversation and then shot two of the young men with a pistol,” Det. Sgt. Hank Idsinga told CP24 at the scene.

Idsinga said police believe the shooting was a targeted attack.

He said police are speaking with witnesses and canvassing the area to speak with anyone who may have heard or seen anything. A forensic team is also at the scene and police are searching for video surveillance footage that may have captured part of what happened.

“We’ll be checking for video cameras in the area. It’s still very early and we’ve got a lot of work to do today,” Idsinga said.

He said one suspect is outstanding, though no suspect description was immediately available.

A number of area roads were closed following the shooting, but most have since reopened as police continue to investigate.

Anyone with information about the shooting is being asked to contact police or call Crime Stoppers.
