One person has been declared dead after a house fire in the city’s east end.

It happened at a home near Gerrard Street East and Greenwood Avenue around 8 p.m. Toronto police said.

Speaking with CP24 at the scene, Platoon Chief Trevor Trotter of Toronto Fire Services said firefighters discovered the body of a male in the home after extinguishing a fire in the kitchen of the lower level.

Toronto Paramedic Services said the man was declared dead at the scene.

Trotter said he wasn’t sure if the house was subdivided into multiple units.

“Right now we haven’t been able to get in there to confirm that,” he said.

The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified and is expected to attend the scene, Trotter said.

The man’s age not yet been revealed. However a neighbor said the occupant of the unit was a man in his 50s who was believed to live alone.

No one else was injured in the blaze.
