One person in Belleville has been isolated after developing Ebola-like symptoms following a trip to Sierra Leone, public health officials say.

Belleville’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Richard Schabas told CP24 the man is a military person who recently returned from the West African country.

Schabas said the man is at Quinte Healthcare Hospital after he developed symptoms similar to those of an Ebola patient.

However Schabas said the chances of the person testing positive for Ebola are very low.

It’s not clear when exactly he returned from Sierra Leone, Schabas said.

Speaking to reporters at a news conference Monday afternoon, officials said the man was in Sierra Leone for a very short period of time and that his exposure to Ebola was 'probably theoretical.'

"The risk of Ebola coming to Canada is very small, but it's not zero," Schabas said.

However he added that officials are confident that they will be able to contain any problems that might emerge.

In the meantime, officials in Ottawa say one person has tested negative for Ebola after returning from a West African country.

The person had been in isolation at The Ottawa Hospital’s General Campus.

“All necessary precautions are being taken to ensure the safety of other patients, visitors and hospital staff. Strict infection prevention and control measures in Ontario hospitals means the risk of Ebola to other patients and health care workers is minimal,” Dr. Jonathan Angel, an infectious disease specialist at The Ottawa Hospital, said in a news release issued earlier Monday.
