One person was pronounced dead and another was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a motorcycle crash early Thursday morning.

It happened on Rosedale Valley Road near Bayview Avenue at around 1 a.m.

According to Const. Clint Stibbe, the 28-year-old male driver was pronounced dead on scene after being thrown from the bike and striking a pole. A 20-year-old female passenger was also thrown from the bike and was rushed to hospital via ambulance.

A second motorcycle was seen in the area at the time of the crash and did return to the scene.

Police say speed may have been a factor along with inexperience.

The driver had an M1 licence, which is issued to novice drivers, and was not permitted to be on the road after sunset.

"Passengers need to ensure that the rider or driver have the right license and the proper amount of experience. Unfortunately what we see overall (in motorcycle fatalities) is lack of experience and excessive speed," Stibbe said.

Rosedale Valley Road was closed between Park Road and Bayview Avenue but reopened at around 6:15 a.m.
