Toronto police say a pedestrian is in life-threatening condition in hospital after a driver lost control of a car and careened into a hydro pole and bus shelter in North York’s Parkwoods neighbourhood overnight Friday.

Const. Clint Stibbe said a vehicle was heading westbound on Lawrence Avenue East near Railside Road when it struck a car coming out of a Tim Hortons in the area.

The westbound vehicle, a Dodge Caliber, exited the roadway and hit a pole, Stibbe said. A pedestrian on the side of the street was struck either by the car or by accompanying debris, and a bus shelter was also damaged.

Stibbe said the pedestrian was taken to Sunnybrook Hospital via emergency run with life-threatening injuries. The pedestrian was not carrying any ID, and police are asking anyone who might know who that person is to contact police.

Stibbe said the four occupants of the Dodge suffered less serious injuries.

Investigators are considering whether speed could be cited as the cause of the crash.

All lanes of Lawrence Avenue East in the area have been closed and are expected to stay closed through the morning rush hour.

The TTC’s 91 Woodbine, 354 Lawrence East and 32/332 Eglinton West buses are all diverting around the closure.
