A 28-year-old Toronto man faces a number of charges in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that left a 25-year-old man dead in Scarborough Tuesday morning.

It happened near McCowan Road and Kenhatch Boulevard, near Finch Avenue, at around 6 a.m.

Toronto police Const. Clint Stibbe told CP24 at the scene that the man was attempting to cross the street when a northbound vehicle struck him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"There was some major body trauma that occurred," Stibbe said.

"It was a substantial impact."

The victim has been identified by roommates as Mandeep Singh.

Police said the driver involved fled the area following the collision. The suspect vehicle was found abandoned north of Finch Avenue a short time later.

One person was taken into custody.

Earlier in the day, police said that they were searching for a second outstanding suspect in connection with the incident. In an update Tuesday night, police said that the second individual was in fact a passenger in the vehicle and is now considered a witness.

Investigators are asking members of the public who may have witnessed the collision to come forward and speak to police.

“We are looking for anybody else who may have been in the area who may have had a dash cam or something on their vehicle that may have recorded the vehicle travelling through the area," Stibbe told reporters Tuesday morning.

McCowan Road was closed for several hours between Sandhurst Circle and Huntingwood Drive as police investigated. The road reopened shortly before noon.

Sean England, of Toronto, faces five charges including impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death, criminal negligence causing death, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

He is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-1900 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
