A public information session on Ontario’s new sex education curriculum was cut short in Scarborourgh on Thursday night after repeated outbursts from parent protesters.
What started off as a calm meeting at Agincourt Collegiate Institute turned into a shouting match between parents with conflicting views.
School board trustees and local MPPs who were hosting the session could not curb the disruptions and ended the meeting early.
“I’m sorry I cannot keep control of you. I apologize to the parents that are here that want to have information,” Scarborough Rouge River MPP Bas Balkissoon said.
“There is obviously an organized protest here that don’t want the meeting to go on so I’m sorry… there are guests of ours here to speak to you. You are not interested in their information and you are just here to disrupt the meeting so the meeting has now ended.”
Many parents who oppose the changes say they believe the new curriculum is teaching kids about topics that are not age appropriate. Several parents at the meeting also complained that they were not properly consulted on the changes.
The new curriculum will be taught at all Ontario schools in September.
