Drivers who are in the habit of parking illegally in the downtown core are in for a rude awakening Monday morning.

Mayor John Tory previously vowed to crack down on motorists who block busy lanes of traffic during rush hour and on Monday, Toronto police will be following through with that promise.

Police and parking enforcement officers are launching an enforcement blitz tomorrow during rush hour, enacting a “zero-tolerance” policy for illegal parking.

Police say all drivers who violate parking rules will be ticketed and towed at a cost of up to $500. Commercial vehicles that are caught blocking lanes of traffic could end up owing up to $1,000.

“If we see you commit the offence, we will charge you,” Const. Clint Stibbe told CTV News Sunday.

Increased parking enforcement is part of Tory’s six-point plan to reduce traffic congestion in the city.

“If I have to chip in and drive a tow truck myself, those vehicles are going to be towed away,” Tory said last month.

Stibbe says 16 officers will be dedicated to tomorrow’s blitz.
