A verbal spat between a TTC bus driver and a passenger turned violent Tuesday night and now the passenger is facing an assault charge.

An account of the exchange, which was posted by a supposed witness on Reddit, says the man verbally harassed the driver for about 20 minutes, before calling him the n-word as he got off the bus.

Police and TTC authorities would not say exactly what was said but confirmed the passenger was reportedly “being verbally assaultive” to the driver.

Toronto police Const. Jenniferjit Sidhu told CP24 that police were called to the bus, parked near Morningside Drive and Kingston Road on Tuesday at about 6:35 p.m.

Police were told a man on the bus was hurling insults at the driver even as he stopped out of the vehicle. The driver stopped the bus, got off and a fight broke out between the two.

The passenger allegedly assaulted the driver with a golf umbrella that measured more than one metre in length. The suspect was arrested and charged with assault with a weapon.

He appeared in court on Thursday, Sidhu said.

The police investigation is ongoing.

TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said all surveillance camera footage from the bus has been provided to police to assist with the investigation.

He would not say whether the bus driver is facing any disciplinary measures by the TTC.
