A 61-year-old dump truck driver has been charged following a fatal hit-and-run in Brampton Wednesday morning.

It happened near Steeles Avenue and Kennedy Road shortly before 6:30 a.m.

According to police, a 21-year-old male pedestrian was attempting to cross Kennedy Road when he was hit by a southbound dump truck.

The victim was rushed to Brampton Civic Hospital but later died from his injuries. His name has not yet been released.

Earlier Wednesday police said they were unsure if the driver of the dump truck, who was last seen heading eastbound on Steeles Avenue, was aware that they had struck someone.

In a release Wednesday night, police announced charges had been laid in connection with the incident.

Brampton resident Sultan Singh Bhamber was arrested shortly before 1 p.m. in Markham. He is charged with failure to remain at the scene of an accident causing death.

He is scheduled to appear in court in Brampton on Dec. 21.
