Peel police have issued a public safety alert after receiving numerous complaints about scammers who purport to be with the Canadian Revenue Agency and then demand personal information from unsuspecting victims.

Police say the scammers contact their victims either on the phone or through mail or email and inform them that they are owed a refund or owe the CRA back taxes, which have to be paid immediately.

The scammers then instruct the victim to provide personal information so they can either receive their refund or pay the outstanding bill, police say.

Peel police are urging residents to not take immediate action if contacted and to instead confirm the information with the CRA before providing any personal details.

Anyone with information about the scam is asked to contact the Fraud Bureau at (905) 453-2121, ext. 3335.
