Police say a 26-year-old man has been arrested after two people were violently assaulted during an attack at an Oshawa apartment building on Monday night.

According to police, officers received a 911 call at around 8 p.m. from a person who reported an unprovoked attack at the building, located in the area of Simcoe Street South and Whiting Avenue.

Police say the 35-year-old female victim was thrown to the ground and had her chest and head stomped on until she lost consciousness.

The 46-year-old male victim, according to police, was able to wrestle a hatchet away from the suspect, but was also assaulted and lost consciousness.

The suspect, who is reportedly known to the victims, was located on Simcoe Street South and was arrested without incident. Police say he later became combative while he was being transported to the police station.

The victims were treated for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, police say.

Matthew Lyght, of Oshawa, has been charged with two counts of assault causing bodily harm, two counts of uttering threats, mischief under $5,000, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and failing to comply with a probation order.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Const. Grenier of Central East Division at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2176.
