The truck driver charged in a fatal crash between a truck and a TTC vehicle has been released on $50,000 bail following a court appearance Friday morning.

The development comes just hours after Toronto police announced they had laid charges against the man in the fatal crash that occurred in Scarborough Tuesday morning.

Manoranjana Kanagasabapathy, 52, was killed when a truck travelling eastbound on Steeles Avenue collided with the bus she was boarding at Middlefield Road around 11:30 a.m. Kanagasabapathy was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 43-year-old woman was also taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

In total, 12 people were sent to hospital with various injuries as a result of the crash.

TTC spokesman Brad Ross declined to comment on the charges.

Ross said the bus driver is recovering at home.

“Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and certainly with the family of the victim,” Ross told CP24.

A funeral is being held this weekend for Kanagasabapathy, a grandmother who moved to Canada from Sri Lanka two decades ago. The Scarborough resident worked at a bank near the crash scene.

On Friday, police said Vincente Bacobe Arbis, 40, of Toronto, had been arrested.

He is now facing seven charges, including criminal negligence causing death, two counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm, dangerous operation causing death, two counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm and dangerous operation.

The conditions of his bail stipulate that he is not allowed to drive and must surrender his passport.
