Several York Regional Police officers became impromptu cowboys Tuesday morning after two cows broke out of their yard southeast of Nobleton.

Const. Andy Pattenden said police received a call about the cows blocking traffic in the area of Kipling Avenue south of King Vaughan Road at about 8:13 a.m.

Two officers closed Kipling Avenue for 30 to 40 minutes while another pair did their best to gesture and call out to the cows to corral them off of the roadway and back inside their yard.

Pattenden said one of the responding officers had prior knowledge of Damian, a rather unfriendly horned bull who has been known to charge at people in the past, and he led the effort to get the cows back to their farm.

He added this is not the first time either cow has escaped. An investigation revealed that Damian breached the southern fence of his farmer’s yard.“We have a saying in policing that you improvise, adapt and overcome, and that’s basically what you do when you get one of these strange calls for animals,” Pattenden said.

Animal control officers did not respond to the scene.

The incident is the third instance in the last two months where York Regional Police have been called to corral wild animals.

Last week, police returned a donkey to its owner near Kleinburg, In April; officers apprehended a turkey wandering near a road in Keswick.
