Halton Regional Police are investigating the cause of a crash that killed a 57-year-old homeless man in Milton on Monday night.

The man was riding a bicycle in the eastbound curb lane of Main Street East, near Wilson Drive, when he was struck from behind by a Buick Rendezvous.

Police officers who were already in the area responded to the collision and performed CPR on the cyclist, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not released the victim’s name, but they say he had no fixed address and his estranged family told investigators he was homeless.

The Buick’s driver, a 62-year-old Milton man, was not injured.

Police said it was dark and raining when the collision occurred, and they are looking into the lighting on the vehicle and bicycle, and visibility of the cyclist – or lack thereof – to confirm or rule out potential factors.

Both the Buick and the bicycle have been taken to a police facility for an examination by investigators.
