York Regional Police officers are dismantling an outdoor marijuana grow operation that was discovered within a corn field in Markham this week.

Officers in the Air2 police helicopter spotted the grow op, which had about 250 plants, while on patrol near Elgin Mills Road and Highway 48 on Wednesday.

Instead of a grow op, the officers were looking for spots where teens may be partying or where homeless people may be squatting.

Each plant has an estimated street value of $1,000, meaning the grow op found in the corn field have an estimated value of $250,000, police told CP24's Katie Simpson.

Nearby, officers found a smaller grow op with about 100 plants.

Police invited the media to the grow op Thursday to observe officers as they uprooted the plants.

No one has been charged.
