Toronto police have identified the 20-year-old man killed after shots were fired from one vehicle into another in North York Wednesday afternoon.

It happened in the Laura Road and Sheppard Avenue West area shortly before 5 p.m.

According to police, officers responded to reports that shots were being fired between two vehicles in the area.

“There was a black vehicle southbound on Laura (Road), another black vehicle overtook it on the left side and opened fire on it,” Toronto police Sgt. Rob Duthie told reporters Wednesday evening.

Duthie said it appeared as if shots were only fired from one vehicle, and not from both as had been originally reported.

At the scene, officers located one vehicle with two men inside.

One of the victims was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition via emergency run while the second victim was transported in non-life-threatening condition.

Police confirmed that the driver of the vehicle died shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday evening. In a release issued Thursday afternoon, investigators identified the man as Abdirizak Hersi.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place today.

The second victim, also 20, has since been released from hospital, police said.

“Police would like to track down a dark, four-door sedan last seen travelling south on Laura Road at Sheppard Avenue West” police said in Thursday’s release.

No suspect information was provided in the update.
