Police in London, Ont., say the mother of baby found dead in a dumpster in that city’s downtown has been arrested and charged.

The baby's body was found at about 11:35 a.m. Thursday, in a dumpster behind a high-rise building near the corner of Richmond and Mill streets, police said.

It is not known what caused the child’s death, and police say results from medical testing and an autopsy will take weeks or months to arrive. Investigators say they believe the baby's body was placed in the dumpster on Thursday.

Investigators say the mother of the child was found in Amherstburg, Ont., more than 200km away from where the baby’s body was found, and arrested Saturday morning.

She was taken back to London by police after being taken to a local hospital to be assessed.

The 23-year-old mother has been charged with one count of neglect to obtain assistance in childbirth, and dispose of body of child after delivery. Both are criminal code offences.

Investigators say no others are being sought at this time.
