A cat injured after multiple shots were fired into a home in Riverside has died, Toronto police have confirmed.

Officers were called to the house in the First and Logan avenues area this afternoon after the homeowner discovered three bullet holes in the front door.

According to police, the bullet holes were only in the home’s main door and not an outer screen door, suggesting that the shooter may have opened the outside door before firing into the home.

The cat, which police said was shot in the belly, was conscious and breathing when found. It was taken to an emergency veterinarian by police, but has since died.

Area residents told CP24 they heard gunshots early this morning. The residents also said that the home is occupied by a woman, believed to be in her 30s, and several young children.

One neighbour said that while the incident was “upsetting,” it doesn’t change her view on the area.

“It doesn’t make me feel unsafe,” Jill Worthy said.

“This is a really safe neighbourhood. It doesn’t make me feel worried about coming in and out of my house – I’m hoping to find out it was targeted or completely random, or the act of a kid.”

Officers remain at the scene investigating.
