Police say they are looking for two suspects in connection with a deadly shooting outside a Scarborough shopping plaza on Friday night.

It happened near Victoria Park Avenue and Ellesmere Road at around 10 p.m.

According to Det. Sgt. Gary Giroux, a man was in the process of getting into the back seat of an SUV after making a purchase at an LCBO when he was approached by the two suspects, one of whom was armed with a firearm.

The armed suspect then fired multiple shots into the back seat of the SUV, striking both the man and a female victim who was seated in the back. A man and a woman who were in the front seat of the SUV were not injured in the shooting and have been cooperating with the investigation, according to police.

The victims have been identified as Joseph Anzolona, 26, of Toronto and Cynthia Mullapudi, 24, of Markham.

“It would appear that all the gunfire was directed at the male who was in the process of getting in the back seat but I can’t say for certain whether the female was targeted or received some collateral gunfire as a result of bullets that missed the male victim and struck her,” Giroux told reporters at the scene Saturday morning. “She was deceased in the vehicle and he became deceased a short time afterwards after arriving in hospital.”

Giroux said that police are in the process of canvassing nearby businesses for surveillance footage and are hopeful that one of the suspects may have been captured on tape.

Police are also looking for a small silver or grey, four-door vehicle that was seen fleeing the scene southbound on Victoria Park Avenue.

As for a motive, Giroux said it is too early to speculate on whether the shooting may have been gang-related.

“I am still looking into all four occupants of the car with regards to their activity during the night, why they were here, where they are going and their backgrounds as well,” he said.
