Police say a car that is believed to be involved in a fatal hit-and-run in Scarborough last month is likely being “withheld” from investigators by people who know or work with the owner of the vehicle.
Investigators say a 56-year-old female pedestrian was struck and killed by a Mercedes while she was attempting to cross Markham Road near Nashdene Road at around 10 p.m. on March 31.
According to police, the driver of the car briefly got out of the vehicle following the collision but ultimately decided to flee the scene.
A suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Saeed Moravvej Torbati, surrendered to police on Monday following a public appeal for information on his whereabouts.
Police say the man’s vehicle has not yet been located.
“Investigators would like to remind the public that anyone who may be aiding the accused by withholding the car from police may face charges,” a news release issued by Toronto police on Wednesday read.
“These charges could include being an accessory after the fact, and obstruction of Justice.”
Police have not yet identified the victim of the fatal collision.
