A missing 11-year-old boy has been safe – behind the wheel of a sport utility vehicle in downtown Toronto.

The child had last been seen in the Lake Shore Boulevard and Parkside Drive area, police originally said.

In a tweet sent out shortly after 7 p.m., police said they believed he was driving a black Chevy Equinox.

Police confirmed that the boy had been found just before 8 p.m.

"Police have stopped the vehicle," the tweet read.

"The (11-year-old-boy) has been located. He is safe and sound. Thanks for all of your help."

The boy was driving the vehicle – which belongs to his parents – when he was pulled over in the Queen Street and Ossington Avenue area, police confirmed.

He was found after police received a number of calls from concerned citizens.

“As luck would have it, officers were going to check on one of those sightings from citizens of the city, and at that point they saw the boy driving the vehicle,” Sgt. Duane St. John said near where the child was found.

“I don’t believe he realized the police were looking for him.”

The child’s parents attended the scene after he was stopped by police.

“I think he’s realized the error of his ways, and hopefully this situation will not happen again,” St. John said.

“It could have turned out badly.”
