Police continue to investigate whether a random home invasion may have been what led to the murder of an 82-year-old woman inside her Scarborough home.

Stella Tetsos was found in her home on Elfreda Boulevard, in the Birchmount Road and St. Clair Avenue area, at around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“She’s a mother and a grandmother – she was a very vibrant 82 year old,” Toronto police Det. Shannon Dawson told reporters.

“She was an important part of this community.”

Previous information indicated that Tetsos was found by police in the basement; however Dawson would not confirm that detail.

Her death was ruled a homicide Thursday.

“There were obvious signs of trauma,” Dawson said.

Police are investigating whether her death may be linked to a robbery.

“Some of Mrs. Tetsos’ property was removed from the residence,” Dawson said. “We know that one item was removed and we have reason to believe that other items were also removed.”

Earlier Thursday, Const. Victor Kwong told CP24 that officers on scene had discovered that a window had been smashed at the home and a door was propped open.

The investigation is now focusing on the two-day period prior to when Tetsos was found dead.

Police continue to review surveillance video collected in the area. Officers are also currently conducting a second canvass of area residents.

No suspect information was provided by police.

“Obviously this is an unusual situation and circumstance, and people should always be aware of their surroundings and take proper precautions,” Dawson said.
