Police have released a number of surveillance camera images of two masked men who walked into a restaurant in the Entertainment District over the weekend and shot a man and a woman who were sitting down for a meal.

The shooting happened at Michael's on Simcoe, which is located near Adelaide and Simcoe streets, at around 7:20 p.m. on Sunday.

The owner of the restaurant has previously said that the masked gunmen entered the establishment, walked directly to the couple's table, and then started shooting.

The woman was shot in the hip while the man was shot in the neck, according to police.

In the surveillance camera images released by police on Friday, the suspects are shown dressed in black and running from the scene with what appear to be weapons in hand. An additional image also shows a dark-coloured vehicle that police are looking for in connection with the shooting.

“The images are grainy but we wanted to release this because it may jog someone’s memory who may have been in the area at the time,” Const. David Hopkinson told CP24 on Friday afternoon. “We are talking about the Sunday at the end of TIFF, there would have been a lot of people around the downtown core, and we want them to come forward with any information they have.”

Victim had gang ties

Police sources have said that the male victim in the shooting, 29-year-old Terry Nguyen, is a member of the Asian Assassinz gang, however it is not immediately clear if that alleged affiliation played a role in the shooting.

Nguyen is charged with a number of weapons-related offences for allegedly being in possession of a gun at the time of the incident.

Speaking with CP24 on Friday, Hopkinson said that police are “following up on a number of leads” but can’t yet speculate on a motive in the case.

“We have two men that walked into a busy upscale restaurant in the downtown core at the height of one of the largest festivals we have in our city and shot two people sitting down for dinner,” he said. “If that is not targeted I don’t know what is. But to be able to say that it is gang related we can’t say that. We simply don’t know who these two people are.”

Police are warning members of the public not to approach the men and instead call 911 if they see them.
