Homicide detectives are canvassing a Lawrence Heights apartment building Saturday as they appeal for information in a deadly shooting that claimed the life of a 31-year-old school teacher earlier this month.

Abshir Hassan was killed and two others were injured in the shooting, which occurred outside an apartment building on Flemington Road shortly after midnight on July 8.

All three victims were "productive members of the community," Det. Sgt. Steve Ryan told reporters at a news conference Saturday.

"This is a crime that we as a community should be outraged by. We all need to step up and reinforce that message that this won’t be tolerated in our neighbourhoods," Ryan said.

"We have the right to stand out on the porch and not be afraid. To enjoy a summer’s night and not be afraid of flying bullets."

Ryan said police still haven't been able to determine a motive.

"(It) could be wrong place, wrong time- a random act. It is too early for us to determine that right now but I can tell you it is unusual at this stage of the investigation that we’ve yet to have a motive," he said.

Ryan said some witnesses have come forward but more information is needed to identify those responsible.

The two others injured in the shooting are still in hospital but Ryan said investigators have been able to interview them.

"They have done their best to lay out what had happened," he said.

Ryan said police are looking for two shooters who police believe stepped out of a grey or silver BMW or Lexis and unloaded several shots before fleeing the scene.

The Toronto Police Service released a video about the investigation on its YouTube channel Saturday and included a clip of video surveillance footage of a vehicle wanted in connection with the incident.

Officers were canvassing the neighbourhood Saturday afternoon and set up a mobile command post outside the Flemington Road building.

"We need help from the community to solve this," Ryan said.
