A 28-year-old man has been pronounced dead after a shooting in a parking lot behind an apartment building in Mimico early Thursday morning.

Police were dispatched to the address on Vanevery Street near Royal York Road at around 2:50 a.m. after someone reported hearing gunshots.

Upon arrival, officers located the victim unconscious and lying in the parking lot at the rear of the building. Paramedics did rush the victim to hospital via emergency run, however he succumbed to his injuries upon arrival.

Few details have been released about the shooting itself at this point, though police say they believe the victim was shot following some sort of argument.

“There was a commotion at the back. Several witnesses have come forward and said that there was some kind of an argument in the parking lot and a result some people opened up their curtains and had a look,” Det. Murray Barnes told reporters at the scene Thursday morning. “It is very early in the investigation. We are appealing for witnesses who heard the commotion behind this building to come forward.”

Barnes said that investigators do not believe the victim lived in the building but are confident that he was “familiar with somebody in the building” and had been there before.

The detective also said that it is his belief that the victim was shot at point-blank range.

Police have said that the victim sustained a single gunshot wound.

“There is a large amount of blood at the back there. It doesn’t look like he had much of a chance after he was shot,” Barnes said.

Police have said that a vehicle was seen fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed following the shooting.

No description has been released for that vehicle.

The victim is not being identified pending notification of next-of-kin.
