Police say a teenager who was viciously beaten by six male suspects after getting out of a taxi in the downtown core almost one year ago will likely “never be the same.”

The then-17-year-old was repeatedly punched and kicked in the head by the unknown assailants seconds after stepping out of a cab on York Street south of Queen Street West at around 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 3.

The attack left the victim in a coma for about a month and though he has since regained consciousness, police say he remains under constant medical supervision.

Meanwhile, the suspects in the attack are still outstanding months after police released surveillance camera images showing their faces. At a news conference on Friday morning police also released the surveillance camera footage that those images were taken from.

“The victim has undergone several surgeries that have saved his life but his quality of live will never be the same,” Det Sgt. Paul Rinkoff said. “I am appealing to the public one more time exactly one year later for your assistance identifying these males. The family of this youth needs some closure and these individuals must be held accountable.”

Though Rinkoff said that police have followed up on several leads in the case, he said that they have not yet been able to identify any of the suspects or determine a motive for the attack.

Likewise, the relationship between the suspects and the victim, if there even was one, remains unclear.

“The Toronto Police Service needs the public’s assistance to identify these males for the victim, for the victim’s family and for the safety of the community,” Rinkoff told reporters on Friday.

The suspects were last seen running westbound along both Richmond Street and Queen Street West.

The suspects are described as five black men and one white man between the ages of 18 and 25.
